Chicago No.017

September 22, 2016

We teamed up with the Macao Government Tourism Office at the recently opened Bakery at Fat Rice in Chicago to celebrate the culture and cuisine of Macao.

In honor of the event, Fat Rice’s Adrienne Lo created a limited-edition Macanese style pastry for Trends on Trends: the Winter Melon Pastry, a puff pastry with winter melon marmalade (Doce de Camalenga), fig leaf, amber rock sugar and, sea salt. Guests also snacked on sweet ube (purple yam) and coconut buns as well as the iconic Macanese egg tart while enjoying milky pulled coffee and tea by Sparrow Coffee.

Attendees like Chicago Tribune food and dining reporter Joseph Hernandez, James Beard Award-winning food writer/videomaker Michael Gerbert, and ABC 7’s Steve Dolinksy colored the morning away on diner-style placemats, adding their own creative touches to illustrated Macanese pastries by artist Hannah Lee. Guests also discovered their “pastry personality” through a personality quiz and learned about Macao’s amazing culinary and architectural history through a word search.

As a final sweet goodbye to an amazing morning, friends went home with pastries in to-go bags sealed with custom made egg tart stickers illustrated by Jade Sheldon.
